Art- Rise in Post-Independent India
Indian Art has always been a wonder and interesting since times
unknown.
Every age speaks of novelty. The influence of invaders has a major role
in
shaping up the Indian Art through the ages. Post independence Indian
Art has
come long way in presentation and style. The colonialism traces and
British
style mainly influenced the artists of that period. Some of the rebels
who
sought to reject the British hues from their art, proposed Swadeshi
Movement
in art. It insisted on representing purely Indian face in Art. The
rural
India, especially lower strata of society was the theme of artist like
Amrita Shergill and Jamini Roy. Shailoz Mukherjiea, Bendre, K. H. Ara
and
likes captured the beauty of Indian nature by simply using lively
colors and
created the aura of tranquility and peace. Artist like Rabindranath
Tagore
who belonged to same period was different from others. His paintings
had
more personal and universal themes rather than insisting only on India.
Catch-22 expression of partition:
Along with Independence India had to taste the bitterness due to
partition.
Partition created chaos among the people and migration from India to
Pakistan and vice versa developed some artist who presented the agony
and
insecurity of partition. In northern India artists like B.C. Sanyal,
Kanwal
Krishna, Dhanraj Bhagat , Mago and others painted the displacement
trauma
and feeling of being abandon.
Art Conscious Indian States
Post Independence, almost every major city and state of India had
groups
that developed their own style and concepts. Progressive Group formed
in
Bombay by M. F. Hussain, S.H. Raza, F. N. Souza, and S.H. Gade. Most
of
them alienated the political themes and expressions that were routine
of
earlier artists. They vent modernism in art, which continues to
influence
modern artists. Hussain has added glamour to Indian painting by
painting his
muse Madhuri Dixit. His bold expression of Indian Goddesses in nude
form has
also made him target of conservative class of Indian society. The group
was
further joined by legends V. S. Gaitonde, M. Samant and Krishen Khanna.
The rural art and handicraft continued to influence the Indian Art and
it
formed a major theme of Cholamandal Artist Village in South of India.
The
artist of this group was inspired by the Indian rural art and
technique. The
group included artists like J. Sultan Ali, S.G. Vasudev, and K.
Ramanujam.
Neo-tantric art too prospered during this period. It stressed on the
shapes
such as triangles, squares and circles that represents emotions.
Shanker De,
Gulam Rasool, Santosh and J. Swaminathan were masters of this style.
Political disturbance and Chaos of '70s and expression of distress
Chaos and disturbance griped the society in seventies. The war with
Pakistan
in 1971, the naxalite movement in Bengal, failing of democracy de to
emergency, political confusion were the negatives that affected people
filling their life with grief and pain. The artist from urban areas of
Mumbai, Calcutta and Delhi captured the trials and tribulations
accurately.
The works of Gieve Patel, Vivian Sunderam, Ganesh Pyne, and Sudhir
Patwardhan truly mark the pain and grief of the common person during
that
time.
Gale of Glamour and Bold Approach by the end of 20th century
With times art changed in its appearance with the set of new artist who
came
up with bold ideas on canvas. The* *Baroda* *Group inspired by Pop Art
and
Neo- Dadaism are responsible for modernistic approach in art.
Towards the end of twentieth century, the artists audaciously presented
idiosyncrasy. The work was based on personal themes. The artist like
Laxman
Shreshtha, Tyeb Mehta, Laxma Goud, Anjolie Ela Menon made this bold
approach.
Bhupen Khakkar went a step further and painted alternate sexuality,
thus,
adding novel hue to Indian Art of painting. Victim hood and issue of
subjectivity was the theme of women artist like Nalini Malini, Arpita
Singh,
Suruchi Chand and others.
Current Scenario
The new century witness a drastic change in approach. Artists like
Subodh
Gupta divert from painting to represent thought through installations.
Atul
Dodhiya seems to be more pluralistic and pragmatic in style. No wonder
the
contemporary artist are able to impress the audience worldwide and
break the
records of sale.
Art an expression of stance and passion
Art cannot be separated from its past influences. In fact, it is one
with
the basic emotions of sensuality, patriotism, love, hatred, contempt,
longing and so on. With the boom in Indian Art and acquiring of
worldwide
recognition, the skill of the artist lies in presenting these feelings
at
universal level. It has to be more revolutionized in presentation and
techniques. The challenge is, to meet the expectations of global market
and
diffused art viewer who admires the Indian concept with universal
appeal.
